  • About The Role and Person

  • An exciting opportunity has arisen at Capel Manor College, and we are seeking to appoint an enthusiastic, skilled and knowledgeable Lecturer in Horticulture to deliver high-quality teaching and learning across our Horticulture and Garden Design programs.

We are looking for an individual with a strong practical horticultural background, excellent communication skills and a genuine passion for plants, gardens and inspiring the next generation of horticulturists.

The successful candidate will have a strong practical horticultural background and be confident in demonstrating, teaching and assessing a wide range of industry-relevant skills. These will include pruning and plant maintenance, soil preparation and cultivation, planting, plant identification and selection, propagation, and the establishment and maintenance of planted areas. Applicants should also be competent in the safe operation and basic maintenance of garden machinery and equipment, including mowers, strimmers, hedge trimmers and rotavators. A sound understanding of garden design principles, sustainable horticultural practices and professional industry standards is essential, alongside the ability to communicate technical knowledge clearly and inspire students to develop their own practical skills and confidence.

The post holder will deliver and assess across Levels 1 to 3, ensuring that students develop the practical skills, technical knowledge and professional behaviours required to succeed within the horticultural industry.

Excellent communication skills are essential. The successful candidate must be able to explain technical concepts clearly, demonstrate practical techniques effectively and adapt their teaching to meet the needs of students with varying levels of experience and ability. They will be expected to create an engaging, inclusive and supportive learning environment that builds confidence, encourages curiosity and develops practical competence.

Responsibilities will include planning and delivering stimulating practical and classroom-based lessons, setting challenging but achievable learning goals, assessing student progress and providing constructive feedback that supports continuous improvement.

The successful candidate will work closely with our experienced team of Practical Instructors and Technicians to coordinate practical learning activities, maintain high standards of horticultural practice and ensure that all health and safety requirements are consistently met.

Ideally, applicants should possess a teaching qualification at Degree or HND and relevant qualification at Level 3 or above in Horticulture together with substantial practical experience and a sound understanding of professional horticultural practices.

We welcome applications from both experienced teacher/trainers and skilled horticultural professionals who are looking to move into teaching, the college is willing to support the right candidate in achieving a teaching qualification. Industry experience, practical competence and the ability to communicate knowledge effectively are particularly important to us.

Above all, we are looking for someone who loves plants, enjoys working in gardens and takes pride in sharing their knowledge and skills with others. If you are an enthusiastic horticulturist who can inspire students, demonstrate professional standards and help learners develop the confidence and practical abilities needed for a successful career in horticulture, we would love to hear from you.
